Bucktown 5K History & 2012 Preview

Attention #Rammies: the Bucktown 5K, or as Maureen of the I Heart Pikermis blog calls it “one of my favorite race[s] in the whole city.” is on September 16th, less than a month away! #Rammies like Heidi of the Tumblog HEIDI READS YA are getting ready!

“Well, it’s official. I’m running my first 5k in September. I’ve started training for one multiple times, but not had one to work towards so I give up. This time I actually have to be ready for one. … This will be great. It’s a good reason to really push myself for something I’ve wanted to do for a while, as well as get my exercise and diet back on the right track.”

Haven’t done the race before? Check out this vintage race video, also featuring interviews with officials from the race’s official charity partner: Gilda’s Club Chicago!

If enjoyed that, you’d also probably like the 2010 and 2011 race videos as well. Any veteran #Rammies see yourselves in the videos?

Similar to Maureen above, Lauren of the Lauren Runs weblog describes the Bucktown 5K as “one of my favorite races” in her 2011 race report; and she was a fan of last year’s goodie bag, “This year’s race didn’t disappoint in the swag:A super track jacket? Don’t mind if I do. It fits great, and has pockets” for 2012 RAM’s Best of Competitor design team has taken the next step with a technical fleece that any runner will adore featuring the Bucktown 5K’s new Chicago-centric logo!

The Bucktown goodie bags have been popular in the blogosphere for years, back in 2007 Delane of the Euphoric Agony wrote:

“So my real reason for running 5K races is the swag. I’ve pretty much eliminated races that have just have a cruddy t-shirt unless it for a really great cause. Thus my motivation for running the Bucktown 5K was the hoodie and hat.”

Also, this year #Rammies will again be treated to the Taste of Bucktown for the third straight year. Local restaurants and food vendors will be handing out samples of their cuisine to participants. All registered #Rammies receive 3 tickets redeemable at these fine local establishments in the post race party: Olivia’s, Starfruit, Choppers and West Town Bakery!!

Finally, for the first time #Rammies you have a chance to vote for the official location of the race after-party! Visit our Facebook page here to vote on the best of the 4 available drink or food specials! What do you think #Rammies, where do you want to spend your post-Post-Race Party?

Board of Governors Win Inaugural Terrapin Idol

As most of you #Rammies surely already know, Chicago’s Board of Governors won the inaugural Terrapin Idol contest!

(In case you missed it, Terrapin Idol was where we gave #Rammies the chance to vote for the 6th band they want to see at the Terrapin 5K. Fans voted via Facebook and it came down to the 11th hour, but BOG came out on top!)

BOG member Trevor Hougardy is especially excited about joining the event, because he’s an endurance athlete himself. As he commented in our press release about the race “I personally am very excited about this race and concert because it combines the two main aspects of my life, music and athletics. Working as a triathlon coach with Trimonster and [TEAM TO END AIDS] allows me to be surrounded by great people that don’t always have the time to train and also stay up late to see live music … but in an environment where they can get a workout, and THEN grab a brew or two and relax and watch some good music … [it’s] the best of both worlds!!”.

He was also very appreciative of all the support he received from #Rammies across the country “The support we received over the last few weeks to help us win this contest has been amazing!! Our friends, family and fans from all over the country really came through and spread the word about voting, and because it was such a close finish, every vote really did count! Props to Chester Brown for keeping this contest such a close call all the way to the end”.

In addition to BOG the Terrapin Music Festival lineup includes Truman & His Trophy, Elephant Gun, The Kickback, The Smoking Popes and, of course, Mr. Blotto!

If you haven’t already registered for this year’s Terrapin 5K what are you waiting for? Time’s running out!

To help you all prepare, here’s a recording of Mr. Blotto’s performance from the 2011 Terrapin 5K.

Finally, one of our star #Rammies, David, is rocking his Terrapin t-shirt with pride on the right side of this photo, but who is the gentleman to his left? The first person to correctly answer the question gets an extra free beer at the race on me!
